Procedural directions for customs clearance are issued by: Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
- 1Register on the NFMIMS online portal and obtain an automatic registration number before the consignment arrives. The application may be filed no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival; the registration fee is ₹500 and the registration number remains valid for 75 days from the date of issue.DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022
- 2Note that the earlier requirement of a minimum 5-day advance registration before arrival has been abolished under S.O. 3759(E) and DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022; same-day or near-arrival registration is now permissible, but the registration must be in place before the bill of entry is assessed.S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022 · DGFT Policy Circular 42/2015-2020 dated 27-07-2022
- 3Where the copper alloy foil is imported under the India-Nepal Treaty, confirm TRQ allocation from DGFT as the designated authority under DGFT Public Notice 17/2023 dated 22-06-2023 (Para i to xv). The 10,000 MT TRQ for copper products under Chapter 74 and CTH 8544 is monitored by DGFT under Para 2.92 of the Handbook of Procedures 2023.DGFT Public Notice 17/2023 dated 22-06-2023 · Handbook of Procedures 2023, Para 2.92
The most common error on this tariff line is allowing the NFMIMS registration to lapse or filing the bill of entry against an expired registration number. Because the automatic number is valid for only 75 days, consignments delayed in transit that arrive after expiry must be re-registered before out-of-charge; a bill of entry filed against an expired NFMIMS number is treated as non-compliant with the monitoring condition and may attract detention pending regularisation with DGFT.
