Compliance steps
  1. 1

Registration must be applied for before the arrival of the consignment and no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival; the registration number remains valid for 75 days.

  2. 2
If importing copper products under Chapter 74 or CTH 8544 from Nepal, confirm whether a Tariff Rate Quota allocation is required for the relevant financial year. DGFT is the designated authority for TRQ allocation and monitoring of 10,000 MT of copper products under the revised India-Nepal Treaty and under Para 2.92 of the HBP 2023.

A word of counsel

The most common error on this tariff line is misreading the abolition of the minimum 5-day advance-registration window as an abolition of the NFMIMS registration requirement itself. Compulsory registration remains mandatory; only the minimum lead-time before arrival has been reduced to zero. Filing a bill of entry without a valid NFMIMS registration number in place renders the consignment non-compliant and liable to detention pending regularisation with DGFT.
