Compliance steps
  1. 1
Register on the PIMS online portal at imports.gov.in and pay the registration fee of ₹500 to obtain an automatic Registration Number. Applications may be submitted not earlier than the 75th day and not later than the 5th day before the expected date of arrival of the consignment; the Registration Number is valid for 75 days from grant.

  2. 2
Enter the PIMS Registration Number and its expiry date in the Bill of Entry to enable customs clearance. Multiple Bills of Entry may be filed against one Registration Number within the validity period for the permitted quantity.
    DGFT Notification 11/2015-2020 dated 25-05-2022
  3. 3
If importing into an SEZ, FTWZ, or as an EOU, obtain PIMS registration at the point of entry into the zone. A DTA unit taking customs clearance from an SEZ/FTWZ/EOU requires its own PIMS registration only if the item has undergone processing resulting in an 8-digit HS code change to a tariff line covered under PIMS.

A word of counsel

The most common error on this tariff line is misreading the application window: importers who apply for PIMS registration on or after the 4th day before expected arrival find the portal rejects the application, leaving the consignment without a valid Registration Number at the bill-of-entry stage and triggering detention and demurrage. Note also that a registration obtained for a specific permitted quantity cannot be used for excess quantities even within the 75-day validity window — a separate registration is required for the additional volume.

How early can a PIMS registration application be submitted, and how long does the Registration Number remain valid?

Does a DTA unit clearing goods from an SEZ or EOU need its own PIMS registration?
Only if the item has undergone processing within the SEZ, FTWZ, or EOU that results in an 8-digit HS code change to a tariff line covered under PIMS; if no such processing has occurred, PIMS registration is not required at the DTA clearance stage, per DGFT Policy Circular 41/2015-2020.
