HSN Chapter 84 covers nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery, mechanical appliances and parts thereof. Within this chapter the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified 90 tariff lines spanning headings 8413 (pumps), 8414 (compressors, fans and hoods), 8415 (air-conditioners), 8418 (refrigerators), 8419 (water heaters and storage units), 8428 (lifting machinery), 8431 (parts for lifting machinery), 8443 (printers), 8450 (household washing machines), 8470 (calculating machines), 8471 (automatic data-processing machines and laptops) and 8476 (vending machines). The chapter is the densest in the entire schedule for line printers, laptops, monitors and tablet computers.

Fourteen Indian Standards dominate the chapter. IS 1391 and IS 8148 govern split and window air-conditioners; IS 10617 covers hermetic compressors; IS 302 specifies safety of household electrical appliances; IS 13252 (with IS 616 in concurrent running) covers audio-video and IT equipment safety; IS 16542, IS 16544 and IS 17150 govern laptops, tablets and printers respectively. Scheme distribution splits between the ISI Mark Scheme for 51 codes (air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters) and the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order for 39 codes (laptops, tablets, printers, monitors).
