HSN 9201 20 00 (grand pianos) is covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order as electronic musical systems. Conformity to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 is mandatory under the Compulsory Registration Scheme with effect from 18 March 2021 under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. Directorate General of Foreign Trade and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs policy controls apply as separate customs-clearance overlays.
Procedural directions for customs clearance are issued by: Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
- 1Verify the foreign manufacturer's BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme R-number on the BIS portal against IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for the specific grand piano model being imported. The R-number must be model-specific and current on the shipping bill date.Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 · S.O. 1248(E) dated 18-03-2021 · S.O. 4997(E) dated 29-10-2025
- 2Confirm which standard the supplier's R-number is registered against: IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 is the operative standard for electronic musical systems. IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 and IS 616:2017 run concurrently for serial no. 65 goods until 1 May 2026, and for all other notified goods until 1 November 2028, after which both legacy standards are withdrawn.S.O. 4997(E) dated 29-10-2025 · General Note 2(C) of the Import Policy
- 3Ensure the product bears the BIS Standard Mark under Scheme-II of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The mark must appear on the equipment itself; marking on packaging alone does not satisfy the regulatory requirement.Scheme-II of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 · Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021
- 4Ensure compliance with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade Notification 13/24-25 dated 20-05-2024 regarding paragraph 2.31(1)(b) of the Foreign Trade Policy 2023 and paragraph 2(c) of the General Notes to the Import Policy before filing the bill of entry.DGFT Notification 13/24-25 dated 20-05-2024 · Para 2.31(1)(b) of the Foreign Trade Policy 2023 · Para 2(c) of General Notes to the Import Policy
- 5Comply with paragraphs 1 to 4 of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Instruction 27/2025-Cus dated 26-08-2025. Quote the BIS R-number on the bill of entry; customs verifies the R-number against the BIS register in real time, and an absent, expired, or model-mismatched registration triggers consignment detention.CBIC Instruction 27/2025-Cus dated 26-08-2025 · BIS Act, 2016 · Customs Act, 1962
The most common error on this tariff line is sourcing a grand piano against a legacy IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 or IS 616:2017 R-number without confirming that the concurrent-running window still applies to that specific serial number category — electronic musical systems at serial no. 65 lose legacy-standard cover on 1 May 2026, a materially earlier deadline than the general 1 November 2028 cut-off. Importers who miss the serial-number-specific sunset date will find the R-number rejected at port on a post-deadline consignment even though legacy-standard registrations remain valid for other product categories.
