Musical instruments; parts and accessories
Musical instruments and their parts and accessories
HSN Chapter 92 covers musical instruments and their parts and accessories. Within this chapter the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified 14 tariff lines spanning pianos (9201), stringed instruments played with a bow (9202), wind instruments — brass, flutes, clarinets and others (9205), percussion instruments (9206), keyboard and electrically amplified instruments (9207), and accessory components (9208). All 14 codes carry the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) designation under Scheme-II of Schedule-II of the BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2018, capturing the electrical and electronic content of modern musical instruments.
The controlling standard is IS/IEC 62368-1 (IS 13252) for audio, video and information-and-communication-technology equipment safety, with IS 616 in concurrent running for an interim period. Manufacturers, Indian or foreign, test a sample at a BIS-recognised laboratory, submit the test report on manakonline.in, file a self-declaration of conformity, and obtain an R-number that must appear on the product. CRS carries no factory inspection; the R-number is verified at Indian ports against supplier name, product description and tariff classification.
