Watches with precious metal cases, other non-battery types
HSN 9101 99 90 (other watches with cases of precious metal or metal clad with precious metal, excluding battery-powered movements) is not covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order and carries no Partner Government Agency clearance requirement at the tariff-line level. Import follows the standard customs procedure: Importer-Exporter Code (IEC), bill of entry, commercial invoice, packing list. Certain watch components and movements classified elsewhere in Chapter 91, or watches incorporating radio-frequency or wireless functions, may attract separate compliance obligations.
The absence of compliance at this tariff line does not extend to every product within Chapter 91: battery-powered watches, smartwatches with wireless transmission capability, and separately imported movements or components each sit on distinct tariff lines that may carry their own obligations. Re-classification on customs examination — particularly where a watch incorporates electronic or wireless features — triggers retrospective compliance and potential detention. Verify the movement type, power source, and any embedded connectivity against the customs tariff before shipment.
