- 1Register on the SIMS online portal and submit advance import information to obtain an automatic SIMS registration number. The application may be filed no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival, and the registration fee is ₹500. The registration number remains valid for 75 days.DGFT Notification 28/2023-24 dated 28-08-2023 · DGFT Notification 33/2015-20 dated 28-09-2020 · Policy Condition 2 of Chapter 86
- 2Confirm that the consignment does not fall within a SIMS exemption before applying. Re-import of steel goods used solely for packaging (not for value addition) and DTA-to-SEZ transfers — whether with or without value addition — are excluded from the SIMS registration requirement.DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022
The most common error on this tariff line is applying for SIMS registration too late. Although the earlier mandatory 15-day minimum advance-registration window was abolished by DGFT Notification 19/2015-20 dated 07-07-2022, the automatic registration number is valid for only 75 days from grant — a consignment that arrives after that window has expired requires a fresh registration, causing detention and accruing demurrage at the port of import.
