Junction boxes
Junction boxes for electrical installations above 1,000 volts
HSN 8535 90 40 (junction boxes for electrical circuits exceeding 1,000 volts) is covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order. Conformity to IS 14772:2020 is mandatory under the ISI Mark Scheme with effect from 1 July 2024, pursuant to the Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023. No separate customs-clearance overlay beyond the BIS obligation applies to this tariff line.
- 1Source only from a Bureau of Indian Standards CM/L-licensed manufacturer holding a current licence against IS 14772:2020 for boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories. Verify the supplier's CM/L number, licensed product scope, and manufacturing facility address on the BIS online register before placing the purchase order.Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023 · S.O. 43(E) dated 01-01-2024
- 2Ensure every junction box bears the ISI mark and the supplier's CM/L licence number under Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The standard mark must appear on the product itself, not on packaging alone.Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 · Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023
- 3Confirm the applicable enforcement date for the supplier's enterprise category: large enterprises from 01-07-2024, small enterprises from 01-10-2024, micro enterprises from 01-01-2025. Purchase orders and shipping dates must align with the correct phase.Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023 · S.O. 43(E) dated 01-01-2024
- 4Quote the supplier's BIS CM/L licence number on the bill of entry. Customs verifies the CM/L in real time against the BIS register; an absent, expired, or scope-mismatched licence triggers consignment detention, demurrage, and potential re-export or confiscation.BIS Act, 2016 · Electrical Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023 · Customs Act, 1962
The most common error on this tariff line is importing from a supplier whose CM/L licence was granted under IS 14772 without confirming whether the licensed scope covers high-voltage junction boxes specifically — IS 14772:2020 governs boxes and enclosures for household and similar electrical installations, and a licence scoped to low-voltage domestic enclosures does not extend to above-1,000-volt apparatus. Customs scrutiny at port is increasing on this distinction; a scope-mismatched CM/L results in detention regardless of whether the ISI mark is physically present on the product.
