Electric smoothing irons
Electric smoothing irons for domestic use
HSN 8516 40 00 (electric smoothing irons) is covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order. Conformity to IS 302 (Part 2 / Sec 3) is mandatory under the ISI Mark Scheme with effect from 17 February 2003, by virtue of the Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2003. No separate customs-clearance overlay applies beyond the BIS obligation.
- 1Source only from a Bureau of Indian Standards CM/L-licensed manufacturer holding a current licence against IS 302 (Part 2 / Sec 3) for electric smoothing irons. Verify the supplier's CM/L number, licensed product scope, and manufacturing facility address on the BIS online register before placing the purchase order.Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2003 · S.O. 189(E) dated 17-02-2003
- 2Ensure every electric iron bears the ISI mark and the supplier's CM/L number under Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The mark must appear on the product itself, not on the packaging alone.Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 · Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2003
- 3Confirm that the IS 302 licence held by the supplier explicitly covers Part 2 / Section 3 (electric irons). IS 302 is a family standard with multiple appliance-specific parts and sections; a CM/L issued against a different part does not satisfy the requirement for electric smoothing irons.IS 302 (Part 2 / Sec 3) · S.O. 189(E) dated 17-02-2003
- 4Quote the supplier's BIS CM/L number on the bill of entry. Customs verifies the CM/L in real time against the BIS register; an absent, expired, or scope-mismatched licence triggers consignment detention, demurrage, and potential re-export or confiscation.Electrical Wires, Cables, Appliances and Protection Devices and Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2003 · BIS Act, 2016 · Customs Act, 1962
The most common error on this tariff line is sourcing from a manufacturer whose CM/L is issued against IS 302 for a different appliance part — say, hair dryers or water heaters — and treating that as sufficient for electric smoothing irons. IS 302 is a multi-part family standard; each appliance category carries its own section, and a CM/L must cite Part 2 / Section 3 specifically to cover electric irons. Presenting a CM/L against the wrong section results in port detention regardless of the fact that the licence number appears valid on the BIS register.
