- 1Register in the Non-Ferrous Metals Import Monitoring System (NFMIMS) online portal by submitting advance information for the aluminium consignment and paying the registration fee of ₹500. The application may be filed no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival; the automatic registration number is valid for 75 days from issuance.DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022
- 2Confirm that the registration number is obtained before the consignment arrives at the Indian port. The earlier minimum-lead-time requirement of 5 days has been abolished to zero advance days, but the registration must pre-date actual arrival; filing post-arrival renders the consignment non-compliant with the NFMIMS advance-information obligation.S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022
The most common error on this tariff line is filing the NFMIMS application at or after the vessel's arrival, on the mistaken belief that abolition of the 5-day lead time means registration can be contemporaneous with the bill of entry. Abolition of the minimum lead time removed only the advance-day floor — the registration must still precede arrival, and a consignment detained for missing NFMIMS registration cannot be released until the automatic number is issued, accruing demurrage and ground rent in the interim.
