Of aluminium alloys
Aluminium alloy plates, sheets and strip exceeding 0.2 mm thickness
HSN 7606 12 00 (aluminium alloy plates, sheets and strip) is covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order. Conformity to one or more of IS 734:1975, IS 736:1986, IS 737:2008, IS 5082:1998, IS 17682:2021, IS 21:1992, or IS 7902:2001 is mandatory under the ISI Mark Scheme with effect from 01 October 2025, under the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025. Non-Ferrous Metal Import Monitoring System registration administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade applies as a separate customs-clearance overlay.
Procedural directions for customs clearance are issued by: Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
- 1Identify the applicable Indian Standard for the specific product being imported: IS 736:1986 or IS 737:2008 for wrought aluminium alloy plate, IS 737:2008 for sheets and strip for general engineering, IS 5082:1998 for electrical-appliance components, IS 17682:2021 for aluminium composite panels, IS 21:1992 for utensil stock, or IS 7902:2001 for aerospace alloy 24343 forgings.Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025
- 2Source only from a Bureau of Indian Standards CM/L-licensed manufacturer holding a current licence against the applicable IS number. Verify the supplier's CM/L number, licensed product scope, alloy designation, and manufacturing facility address on the BIS online register before placing the purchase order.Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 · Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025
- 3Ensure every plate, sheet, or strip bears the ISI mark and the supplier's CM/L number, with batch traceability to the licensed manufacturing facility. Product-level marking is required and cannot be substituted by packaging-only marking.Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
- 4Register the consignment on the Non-Ferrous Metal Import Monitoring System portal under Annexure-II (aluminium) before consignment arrival. Fee ₹500; apply no earlier than 60 days before expected arrival; registration valid for 75 days. The minimum 5-day advance requirement has been abolished.DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022 · DGFT Policy Circular 42/2015-2020 dated 27-07-2022
- 5Quote both the supplier's BIS CM/L number and the NFMIMS registration number on the bill of entry. If the importing entity qualifies as a micro enterprise under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the BIS QCO effective date is 01 April 2026; small enterprises effective date is 01 January 2026.Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025 · para 2 exemptions
The most common error on this tariff line is treating it as a single-IS obligation and sourcing a CM/L against IS 737:2008 alone, without confirming whether the specific alloy grade, end-use category, or product form brings a different Indian Standard into scope — IS 5082:1998 for electrical-appliance sections, IS 17682:2021 for composite panels, IS 7902:2001 for aerospace alloy 24343 forgings. Customs verifies the CM/L scope against the declared product description at bill-of-entry stage; a mismatch between the licensed IS and the imported product description triggers detention and a fresh conformity cycle regardless of whether a CM/L exists.
