Aluminium and aluminium alloy wire for general engineering and electrical purposes
HSN 7605 29 90 (aluminium wire, other) is covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order. Conformity to IS 739:1992 (wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy wire for general engineering purposes) or IS 2067:1975 (wrought aluminium wire for electrical purposes) is mandatory under the ISI Mark Scheme with effect from 01 October 2025, under the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025. Non-Ferrous Metals Import Monitoring System registration administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade applies as a separate customs-clearance overlay.
Procedural directions for customs clearance are issued by: Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
- 1Source only from a Bureau of Indian Standards CM/L-licensed manufacturer holding a current licence against IS 739:1992 for general engineering wire or IS 2067:1975 for electrical-purpose wire. Verify the supplier's CM/L number, licensed product scope, and manufacturing facility on the BIS online register before placing the purchase order.Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025
- 2Confirm the applicable standard for the specific wire type before order placement: IS 739:1992 covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy wire for general engineering; IS 2067:1975 covers wrought aluminium wire for electrical purposes. The CM/L licence must correspond to the correct standard for the intended application.IS 739:1992; IS 2067:1975 · Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
- 3Ensure each consignment bears the ISI mark and the supplier's CM/L number on the product or its packaging in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Unmarked wire is non-compliant regardless of accompanying certification documents.Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 · Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025
- 4Register the consignment on the Non-Ferrous Metals Import Monitoring System portal before arrival, no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival. Pay the registration fee of ₹500; the automatic registration number is valid for 75 days.DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022 · S.O. 3759(E)
- 5Quote both the supplier's BIS CM/L number and the NFMIMS registration number on the bill of entry. If the importing entity qualifies as a micro enterprise under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, document the Udyam registration, as the BIS QCO effective date for micro enterprises is 01 April 2026, and for small enterprises is 01 January 2026.S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025 · Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · DGFT Policy Circular 42/2015-2020 dated 27-07-2022
The most consequential error on this tariff line is importing under a single CM/L licence without verifying that the licence is matched to the correct Indian Standard for the declared end-use. IS 739:1992 and IS 2067:1975 are not interchangeable — a wire consignment declared for electrical purposes but certified under IS 739:1992 (general engineering) will fail the scope-match check at port, triggering detention irrespective of the ISI mark's physical presence. Confirm the end-use classification and the corresponding IS number with the supplier in writing before shipment, not at the customs shed.
