The most common error on this tariff line is applying only IS 1285:2002 (general engineering hollow sections) without checking whether the specific hollow profiles being imported are destined for electrical appliances — a use-case that mandates IS 5082:1998 instead. The two standards are not interchangeable: a CM/L licensed only against IS 1285:2002 does not cover profiles within IS 5082:1998 scope, and customs will detain a consignment where the licensed standard does not match the declared end-use. Confirm the correct applicable standard in writing with the supplier before the purchase order.
