Compliance steps
  1. 1
Register on the NFMIMS online portal under Annexure II (aluminium) and submit advance import information before the consignment arrives. Pay the registration fee of ₹500 to obtain the automatic registration number; apply no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival.
    DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · DGFT Policy Circular 42/2015-2020 dated 27-07-2022
  2. 2
Note that the earlier mandatory minimum advance-registration window of 5 days before consignment arrival has been abolished — registration can be applied for up to and including the expected date of arrival. The automatic registration number is valid for 75 days from issuance; file the bill of entry within that validity window.

A word of counsel

The most common error on this tariff line is allowing the 75-day NFMIMS registration to lapse between application and actual bill-of-entry filing — particularly when vessel arrival is delayed. A lapsed registration requires a fresh application and a new ₹500 fee; customs out-of-charge cannot be granted against an expired registration number, and prolonged lapses attract detention and demurrage at the port of import.
