Conformity to IS 7902:2001 is mandatory under the ISI Mark Scheme with effect from 01 October 2025, under the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025. - 1Source only from a Bureau of Indian Standards CM/L-licensed manufacturer holding a current licence against IS 7902:2001. Verify the supplier's CM/L number, licensed product scope, and manufacturing facility on the BIS online register before placing the purchase order.Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025 · Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
- 2Ensure every ingot bears the ISI mark and the supplier's CM/L number under Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The standard mark must appear on the product or its accompanying documentation as required under the licence.Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018 · S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025
- 3Register the consignment on the Non-Ferrous Metal Import Monitoring System (NFMIMS) portal before arrival, applying no earlier than 60 days before the expected arrival date. Fee is ₹500; the automatic registration number is valid for 75 days from issue.DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022
- 4Quote the supplier's BIS CM/L number and the NFMIMS automatic registration number on the bill of entry. Customs verifies both independently; an absent, expired, or scope-mismatched CM/L triggers consignment detention, demurrage, and potential re-export.BIS Act, 2016 · Customs Act, 1962 · DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021
- 5If the importer qualifies as a micro enterprise under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, note that the QCO effective date is deferred to 01-04-2026, and for small enterprises to 01-01-2026. Obtain and retain documentary proof of MSME classification to present at customs if relying on the deferred effective date.S.O. 2021(E) dated 05-05-2025 · Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 · Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006
The single most common error on this tariff line is importing against IS 7902:2001 without confirming that the CM/L licence specifically covers aluminium alloy forging stock and forgings (alloy 24343) for the intended end-use. IS 7902:2001 is scope-specific to aerospace-grade forging stock; importers of general-purpose unwrought aluminium ingots for utensil manufacture must separately verify IS 21:1992 applicability. A CM/L under one standard does not substitute for a licence obligation under the other, and a scope mismatch detected at port results in detention regardless of the NFMIMS registration status.
