- 1Apply online for NFMIMS advance registration before the consignment's arrival, paying the registration fee of ₹500, and obtain the automatic registration number. Registration may be applied not earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival; no minimum lead time before arrival is required following the abolition of the 5-day advance requirement.DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021 · S.O. 3759(E) · DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022
- 2Confirm that the automatic registration number is current at the bill-of-entry stage — it remains valid for 75 days from issuance. Also review DGFT Policy Circular 42/2015-2020 dated 27-07-2022 for the Ministry of Mines clarification on the scope of NFMIMS coverage for copper articles.DGFT Policy Circular 42/2015-2020 dated 27-07-2022 · DGFT Notification 61/2015-2020 dated 31-03-2021
- 3Where the import originates from Nepal under the revised India-Nepal Treaty, verify whether the consignment falls within the 10,000 MT TRQ allocation for copper products (Chapter 74 and CTH 8544) for the relevant financial year and comply with the allocation and monitoring procedure under Para 2.92 of the Handbook of Procedures 2023.DGFT Public Notice 17/2023 dated 22-06-2023, Para (i) to (xv) · Para 2.92, Handbook of Procedures 2023
The most common error on this tariff line is filing the bill of entry with an expired NFMIMS registration number — the automatic number is valid for only 75 days from the date of issuance, and a consignment arriving after expiry requires a fresh registration before out-of-charge can be granted. Importers who apply close to the 60-day window and encounter vessel delays frequently find their registration has lapsed on arrival; re-registration after vessel berthing attracts detention and demurrage while the new automatic number is processed.
