Compliance steps
  1. 1
Apply for NFMIMS advance registration on the DGFT online portal and pay the registration fee of ₹500 to obtain an automatic registration number. Application may be filed no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival; the minimum advance-registration window of 5 days has been abolished to zero under S.O. 3759(E) and DGFT Notification 26/2016-20 dated 10-08-2022.

  2. 2
Ensure the automatic NFMIMS registration number is current at the bill-of-entry stage; the number is valid for 75 days from the date of issuance. A lapsed or absent registration number will prevent out-of-charge by customs.

  3. 3
If importing copper products under the India-Nepal Treaty TRQ (10,000 MT allocation for Chapter 74 and CTH 8544 for FY 2023-24), confirm TRQ allocation and comply with the revised procedure under Para 2.92 of the Handbook of Procedures 2023 notified by DGFT as the designated allocation authority.

A word of counsel

The most frequent error on this tariff line is filing the bill of entry before the NFMIMS registration number has been obtained, in the mistaken belief that the abolition of the 5-day advance-registration window means registration can follow arrival. The abolition of the minimum window means registration may be applied for right up to the day of arrival — it does not dispense with prior registration altogether. A consignment arriving without a valid automatic registration number is detained at customs pending NFMIMS compliance, attracting demurrage and ground rent.
