Compliance steps
  1. 1
Register the import on the NFMIMS online portal before consignment arrival. Apply no earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival and pay the registration fee of ₹500; the automatic registration number issued is valid for 75 days. The prior minimum lead-time of 5 days before arrival has been abolished under S.O. 3759(E).

  2. 2
If the consignment is imported under the revised India-Nepal Treaty Tariff Rate Quota for copper products (Chapter 74 and CTH 8544), obtain a TRQ allocation from DGFT as the designated authority, in accordance with the procedure under Para 2.92 of the Handbook of Procedures 2023. Imports under TRQ without a valid allocation are treated as non-quota imports and attract standard duty.

A word of counsel

The most common error on this tariff line is allowing the 75-day NFMIMS registration validity to expire before the vessel arrives — consignments presented at customs with an expired registration number are treated as unregistered imports and cannot be cleared until fresh registration is obtained, resulting in detention, demurrage, and ground rent. The registration window opens at 60 days prior to expected arrival; filing too early is as consequential as filing too late.
