Present the valid SIMS registration number at the bill-of-entry stage. The earlier requirement of advance registration at least 15 days before expected date of arrival has been abolished; however, the registration must be current and within the 75-day validity window at the time of customs filing.

The most common error on this tariff line is misapplying the SIMS carve-outs: re-imports of steel articles used solely for packaging are exempt from SIMS registration, and DTA-SEZ-DTA movements (whether with or without value addition) are equally exempt under DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022. Importers who incorrectly obtain a SIMS number for an exempt re-import incur no penalty, but importers who fail to register for a standard commercial import face detention of the consignment pending regularisation.
