- 1Register on the SIMS online portal and obtain the automatic registration number by paying ₹500 before shipment arrival. Applications may be submitted no earlier than the 60th day before the expected date of arrival; the registration number is valid for 75 days from grant.DGFT Notification 33/2015-20 dated 28-09-2020 · DGFT Notification 28/2023 dated 28-08-2023
- 2Note that the earlier requirement for a minimum 15-day advance registration before the expected date of arrival has been abolished. Ensure the SIMS registration number is quoted on the bill of entry at customs and that the registration remains valid on the date of arrival.DGFT Notification 19/2015-20 dated 07-07-2022
- 3Confirm whether the SIMS registration requirement applies to your import: re-imports of steel solely for packaging purposes and DTA-SEZ-DTA transfers (with or without value addition) are exempt from SIMS registration under the clarifications issued by DGFT.DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022
The most common error on this tariff line is filing the bill of entry with an expired SIMS registration number — the 75-day validity window is short and misaligned with typical vessel transit times when registration is obtained too early. Because the earliest permissible registration date is the 60th day before arrival, applying at the 60-day mark and then suffering a shipping delay beyond 75 days leaves the importer with a lapsed number at customs, triggering detention and requiring a fresh application before out-of-charge can be granted.
