- 1Register the steel import on the SIMS online portal and obtain an automatic SIMS registration number before the consignment arrives. Apply no earlier than the 60th day before the expected date of arrival; the registration fee is ₹500 and the number remains valid for 75 days.DGFT Notification 33/2015-20 dated 28-09-2020 · DGFT Notification 28/23 dated 28-08-2023 · Policy condition no. 2 of Chapter 73
- 2Confirm whether the import qualifies for a SIMS exemption before applying. Re-import of steel articles for packaging purposes and DTA-to-SEZ-to-DTA transfers — whether with or without value addition — are exempt from SIMS registration requirements.DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022 · DGFT Notification 19/2015-20 dated 07-07-2022
The most common error on this tariff line is allowing the SIMS registration to lapse before the consignment arrives at port. The automatic registration number is valid for only 75 days from the date of grant, and a number that expires in transit leaves the bill of entry without a valid SIMS reference — triggering detention at the customs station until a fresh registration is obtained. Apply as close to the 60-day advance window as shipping schedules allow, but budget for vessel delays.
