- 1Verify the foreign manufacturer's BIS CM/L licence number against the applicable Indian Standard for the specific rope type: IS 2266:2019 (general engineering), IS 2365:2018 (lift/elevator suspension), IS 1856:2005 (haulage), IS 4521:2001 (oil well drilling), or IS 1804:2004 (fibre main core ropes). Confirm the licensed scope covers the rope construction, diameter, and manufacturing facility.Steel Wires or Strands, Nylon or Wire Ropes and Wire Mesh (Quality Control) Order, 2024 · S.O. 2581(E) dated 03-07-2024; Ropes and Cordages QCO 2024 · S.O. 4327(E) dated 03-10-2024

The most consequential error on this tariff line is applying a single CM/L licence across multiple rope types without verifying that the licence scope matches the specific construction being imported. IS 2266:2019, IS 2365:2018, IS 1856:2005, IS 4521:2001, and IS 1804:2004 are each standard-specific and the CM/L is correspondingly scope-limited — a licence for general engineering ropes under IS 2266:2019 does not cover elevator-duty suspension ropes under IS 2365:2018 or oil-well ropes under IS 4521:2001, and customs detention follows a scope mismatch as surely as an absent licence. Verify the precise construction, end-use, and IS number of each line item on the purchase order against the supplier's CM/L scope before the shipment is booked.
