- 1Apply for SIMS registration on the DGFT online portal not earlier than the 60th day before the expected date of arrival of the import consignment. Submit advance import information and pay the registration fee of ₹500 to obtain the automatic registration number, which remains valid for 75 days.DGFT Notification 28/2023 dated 28-08-2023 · DGFT Notification 33/2015-20 dated 28-09-2020 · Policy condition no. 2 of Chapter 73
- 2Ensure the SIMS automatic registration number is quoted at the bill-of-entry stage. The 15-day minimum advance-registration requirement has been abolished; however, registration must precede the expected date of arrival of the consignment.DGFT Notification 19/2015-20 dated 07-07-2022
- 3Confirm the consignment falls within SIMS scope. Re-imports of steel items for packaging purposes only and transfers between DTA and SEZ (with or without value addition) are exempt from SIMS registration per DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022.DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022 · DGFT Notification 33/2015-20 dated 28-09-2020
The most common error on this tariff line is misunderstanding the 75-day validity window of the SIMS registration number relative to the actual vessel arrival date. A registration obtained too early — beyond 60 days before arrival — is rejected by the portal, while one obtained after consignment dispatch may expire before the bill of entry is filed if port congestion extends dwell time. Align the SIMS application date precisely to the confirmed vessel schedule, not the purchase-order date.
