Optical elements
Optical elements of glass, not optically worked
HSN 7014 00 20 (optical elements of glass, not optically worked) is not covered by a Bureau of Indian Standards Quality Control Order and carries no Partner Government Agency clearance requirement at the tariff-line level. Import follows the standard customs procedure: Importer-Exporter Code, bill of entry, commercial invoice, packing list. Glass articles that are optically worked, or that fall under heading 7015 (optical glass for ophthalmic use), are classified separately within Chapter 70 and may attract distinct compliance obligations.
The boundary between unworked optical elements under heading 7014 and optically worked glass elements under heading 7015 is determined by the degree of surface finishing — a distinction customs officers examine at the point of entry. Re-classification to a heading that carries BIS or other compliance obligations triggers detention and retrospective duty recovery. Importers should ensure product specifications, including surface treatment and end-use documentation, are consistent with the 7014 00 20 tariff line before shipment.
