- 1Apply for PIMS registration at imports.gov.in no earlier than the 75th day and no later than the 5th day before the expected date of arrival of the consignment. - 2Enter the PIMS Registration Number and its expiry date in the Bill of Entry at the time of filing. Customs clearance and out-of-charge are contingent on this entry; a bill of entry filed without a valid Registration Number is non-compliant and will be detained pending regularisation.DGFT Notification 11/2015-2020 dated 25-05-2022
- 3If the importer is an SEZ, FTWZ, or EOU unit, obtain PIMS registration at the point of import into the zone. A separate PIMS registration for DTA clearance is not required unless processing in the zone results in a change of HS code at the 8-digit level to a tariff line covered under PIMS.DGFT Policy Circular 41/2015-2020 dated 05-07-2022 · DGFT Policy Circular 45/2015-20 dated 23-01-2023
The most common error on this tariff line is applying for PIMS registration too close to the arrival date — or after the vessel has departed — leaving fewer than five days before arrival, which renders the registration window closed and the consignment liable to detention at port. The 75-day validity of the Registration Number also means that multiple-shipment planning must account for the expiry window; a second consignment arriving after the Registration Number lapses requires a fresh application and fee, even if the permitted quantity was not exhausted.
