- 1Apply for PIMS registration at imports.gov.in no earlier than the 75th day and no later than the 5th day before the expected date of arrival of the consignment. Pay the registration fee of ₹500 to obtain the automatic Registration Number, which remains valid for 75 days and permits multiple bills of entry within that validity period for the permitted quantity.DGFT Notification 11/2015-2020 dated 25-05-2022 · ITC (HS) 2022 Chapter 48 policy condition
- 2Enter the PIMS Registration Number and its expiry date in the bill of entry before filing at customs. Failure to quote a current, valid Registration Number prevents customs out-of-charge and exposes the consignment to detention and demurrage at the port.DGFT Notification 11/2015-2020 dated 25-05-2022 · DGFT Policy Circular 41/2015-2020 dated 05-07-2022
- 3If importing into a Special Economic Zone, Free Trade and Warehousing Zone, or as an Export Oriented Unit, obtain PIMS registration at the point of import. If the goods are subsequently cleared to the Domestic Tariff Area without processing, no fresh PIMS registration is required; however, if processing results in an 8-digit HS code change to another PIMS-covered tariff line, the DTA importer must register separately.DGFT Policy Circular 41/2015-2020 dated 05-07-2022 · DGFT Policy Circular 45/2015-2020 dated 23-01-2023
The most common error on this tariff line is misunderstanding the registration window: applications filed earlier than 75 days before the expected arrival date are not accepted, while applications filed later than 5 days before arrival result in an invalid or absent Registration Number at customs — both outcomes cause consignment detention. Because a single Registration Number covers multiple bills of entry only within its 75-day validity and only up to the permitted quantity, importers managing staggered shipments must plan registration timing for each tranche independently.
