Compliance steps
  1. 1
Register on the PIMS portal at https://imports.gov.in no earlier than the 75th day and no later than the 5th day before the expected date of arrival. Pay the registration fee of ₹500 to obtain the automatic Registration Number, which is valid for 75 days from the date of grant.

  2. 2
Enter the PIMS Registration Number and its expiry date on the bill of entry at the time of filing. Multiple bills of entry may be filed against a single Registration Number within the validity period, provided the aggregate quantity does not exceed the permitted quantity registered.

  3. 3
If importing into a SEZ, FTWZ, or as an EOU, note that PIMS registration is required at the point of entry into the zone. A DTA unit clearing processed paper from a SEZ/FTWZ/EOU where the 8-digit HS code has changed must independently register under PIMS if the processed item falls within the PIMS tariff-line list.

A word of counsel

The most common error on this tariff line is miscalculating the PIMS registration window — applying too early or too late renders the Registration Number either expired or absent at the bill-of-entry stage, causing detention and demurrage while a fresh registration is processed. The 75-day validity window begins at grant, not at the expected arrival date, so a consignment delayed in transit can exhaust the registration before customs out-of-charge is obtained; plan for transit buffers and apply as close to the 5-day pre-arrival deadline as the shipment schedule permits.
