Sodium nitrite straddles both the food-additive and industrial-chemical categories, and the most common error is assuming that a drug or industrial consignment is exempt from FSSAI Import Licence requirements simply because the declared end-use is non-food. Customs officers apply the FSSAI overlay to the tariff line regardless of declared end-use; an importer without a current FSSAI Import Licence faces consignment detention at the designated food-import port and cannot rectify a missing PGA clearance through the labelling-rectification dispensation, which applies only to label deficiencies, not absent licences.
