HSN Chapter 90 covers optical, photographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical and surgical instruments. Within this chapter the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has notified 12 tariff lines split across two schemes: 10 codes under the ISI Mark Scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2018) covering domestic massage apparatus (IS 302), flashlight apparatus (IS 2083), industrial flow and liquid meters (IS 2373, IS 779) and switchgear-related instruments (IS 15041), and 2 codes under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) covering spectacle lenses and other measuring instruments tested for electrical safety against IS/IEC 62368-1 (IS 13252) with IS 616 in concurrent running.

Indian manufacturers of ISI-notified items must hold a CM/L licence; foreign manufacturers must obtain a licence under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) and appoint an Authorised Indian Representative (AIR). CRS-notified items follow the self-declaration pathway after testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory and obtain an R-number issued under Scheme-II of Schedule-II.
