- 1Register on the SIMS online portal not earlier than 60 days before the expected date of arrival of the import consignment, pay the registration fee of ₹500, and obtain the automatic SIMS registration number. The registration number remains valid for 75 days from the date of grant.DGFT Notification 33/2015-20 dated 28-09-2020 · DGFT Notification 28/2023 dated 28-08-2023 · Policy condition 5 of Chapter 72
- 2Confirm applicability of SIMS before filing the bill of entry: re-imports of steel goods solely for packaging purposes and DTA-to-SEZ-to-DTA movements (with or without value addition) are exempt from the SIMS registration requirement.DGFT Policy Circular 38/2015-20 dated 19-01-2022 · DGFT Notification 19/2015-20 dated 07-07-2022
The most common error on this tariff line is applying for SIMS registration too late and allowing the 75-day validity to lapse before the vessel arrives. The minimum-15-day advance registration requirement was abolished by DGFT Notification 19/2015-20, but the registration window opens no earlier than 60 days before the expected arrival date — timing the application against the sailing schedule is therefore critical, as an expired registration number at the bill-of-entry stage triggers detention and fresh registration, generating demurrage and ground rent.
