Jewellery box
Jewellery boxes of leather, plastics, or textile materials
HSN 4202 39 10 (Jewellery box) is subject to the ITC (HS) import policy administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which permits import as Free with one material-based prohibition: jewellery boxes made of or incorporating seal skin in any form are Prohibited under the ITC (HS) policy.
- Import policy declaration from DGFT
- Material composition declaration from exporter
- 1Verify that the jewellery boxes do not incorporate seal skin in any form — as outer covering, lining, trim, or component — before filing the bill of entry. Import of seal skin in any form is Prohibited under the ITC (HS) policy and any such consignment is liable to confiscation.ITC (HS) import policy, Chapter 42 — seal skin prohibition
- 2File the bill of entry with a material-composition declaration from the exporter confirming the absence of seal skin. Customs may request supporting documentary evidence of the outer and lining materials used in manufacture.ITC (HS) import policy, Chapter 42
The most common error on this tariff line is overlooking the seal skin prohibition when sourcing jewellery boxes with exotic or animal-derived material components. The prohibition applies to seal skin in any form — including minor trim, lining, or decorative elements — and is not limited to boxes wholly covered with seal skin; a consignment carrying even a partially seal-skin-trimmed unit is entirely Prohibited, attracting confiscation of the entire consignment.
