Ginger oil
Ginger essential oil, other essential oils
HSN 3301 29 26 (Ginger oil) is subject to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Import Licence and labelling compliance under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including the FSS (Import) Regulations, 2017 and FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) policy overlays apply, and consignments must enter through designated food-import entry points per General Note 4(D) of Schedule I of the ITC (HS) 2022.
- Import Licence from FSSAI
- Specimen copy of label from FSSAI
- Compliance declaration from CBIC
Procedural directions for customs clearance are issued by: Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
- 1Obtain the FSSAI Import Licence before the bill of entry is filed, and upload both the FSSAI Import Licence (document code 911001) and the Specimen Copy of Label (document code 0110FS) in e-Sanchit. The proper officer will verify these documents before granting out-of-charge.CBIC Instruction 10/2022-Customs dated 28-06-2022; CBIC Instruction 09/2023-Cus dated 07-03-2023; FSSAI order dated 18-11-2022 under F.No.Import/TFM/Apex/2022-FSSAI
- 2Ensure the consignment enters only through a food-import entry point designated under General Note 4(D) of Schedule I of the ITC (HS) 2022. Arrival at a non-designated port renders the consignment liable to detention and FSSAI-directed re-export or confiscation.General Note 4(D) of Schedule I of ITC (HS) 2022; CBIC Instruction 09/2023-Cus dated 07-03-2023
- 3Verify that the product label complies with FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. Limited labelling deficiencies — including per-serve RDA contribution and expiry-date addition by the manufacturer — may be rectified at the customs bonded warehouse by affixing a single non-detachable sticker next to the principal display panel, subject to authorised-officer verification before inspection.CBIC Instruction 10/2022-Customs dated 28-06-2022; FSSAI Letter 1828/Misc Matters/FSSAI/Imports-2021 dated 17-06-2022; FSSAI clarification order dated 18-11-2022
The most common error on this tariff line is attempting to import under Chapter 33 a product that is a mixture of odoriferous substances: such mixtures are classifiable under HSN 3302, carrying a separate FSSAI compliance track, and misclassification will trigger a re-assessment and potential seizure at customs. Verify at the purchase-order stage that the imported product is a single-species ginger essential oil and not a compounded fragrance blend; the classification distinction is a customs examination trigger, not merely a paperwork issue.
